Improving Your Home

If the home you move to is one where you plan to stay for a relatively long time, you may want to make certain alterations, improvements or additions to your home. This may include putting in a new kitchen or building a garden shed, for example.

Before you do make any improvement, you must get written permission from our Maintenance Department. In some cases you may also need the consent of the local authority, if planning permission or building regulations approval is necessary.

First Wessex will not stop you from making improvements unless we have a good reason. However, we may insist that the work is carried out to a certain standard to protect the rights and safety of you and your neighbours, and to make sure the property is kept in a good condition of repair.

If you do not get our written permission, or if the work you do does not meet the standard required, this may be viewed as a breach of your Tenancy Agreement. We can also ask you to put the property back to its original condition at your cost. So, before you make an improvement, make an appointment with your Maintenance Officer to talk it through.

In some cases, the improvements you make may entitle you to compensation when your tenancy ends
